As the global tourism industry undergoes significant transformation, the British travel tech company Byway announced the completion of a $6.4 million A-round funding round. This capital will be used to expand its AI-powered, no-flight travel planning service. The round was led by Heartcore Capital, with participation from Eka Ventures and several angel investors.

Byway's establishment was quite dramatic. In March 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic swept through Europe, founder Cat Jones decided to create a company focused on slow travel and sustainable tourism. To date, Byway has sold over 4,200 trips, with an annual growth rate of 300%, fully proving the viability of its business model.

Jones said, "We believe that slow travel and more sustainable travel methods are flourishing." What makes Byway unique is that its travel products do not rely on planes but travel by train, bus, or ferry on land (and sea), allowing vacationers to enjoy scenery in secluded places and avoid crowded popular attractions.

AI-driven travel planning

The core competitive advantage of Byway lies in its proprietary AI travel planning technology, JourneyAI. This system can design personalized travel routes based on users' preferences, traffic schedules, ticket information, and past successful cases. Currently, about 60% of vacation packages are booked online, which means customers directly use JourneyAI for travel design.

Jones explained, "Our AI not only designs enjoyable routes but also ensures that the itinerary has some resilience. To handle potential interruptions in multi-stop land travel, JourneyAI has built-in flexibility to quickly provide alternative solutions if the original plan is blocked.

Merging AI with human services

Although AI technology plays a key role in Byway's business, human services still hold an important position. About 40% of sales come from personalized concierge services, where staff communicate with customers to design travel plans that meet individual needs.

"In many cases, technology performs very well," Jones said, "but there are indeed some cases where we need human involvement to perfect the service." The company also sets up WhatsApp groups for customers to ensure that travelers can receive support at any time during their journey.

 The future of sustainable tourism

Byway's success is not just a business story but also reflects an important trend in the tourism industry. Environmental issues are prompting more and more vacationers to seek ways to reduce flights, while many popular tourist destinations are struggling to deal with the impact of over-tourism.

Jones said, "Multi-stop land travel changes the pace of travel and creates opportunities for another form of tourism that has less environmental impact. They can also extend economic benefits to more places, alleviating the pressure on tourist hotspots."

Future development plans

With the completion of the new round of financing, Byway plans to further expand its team, particularly increasing engineers to strengthen investment in JourneyAI technology. The company is also preparing for regional expansion, including establishing a base in the Netherlands to meet regulatory requirements after Brexit.

"Once we complete the application for European bonds, we can start promoting our services across the entire European market," Jones looked forward.

Under the backdrop of increasing attention to sustainable tourism, Byway's innovative model and latest financing undoubtedly bring new possibilities to the travel tech field. With the continuous advancement of AI technology and the growing demand for eco-friendly travel among consumers, Byway's development deserves continuous attention from the industry.
