Google has recently introduced a new feature for Android users: Gemini can now answer some basic questions even when the phone is locked. Previously, when you said "Hey Google" to a locked Android phone, Gemini's capabilities were quite limited, such as setting alarms, controlling media playback, adjusting the flashlight, and volume. But now, it can help you answer basic questions, such as the weather, game times, demographic statistics, and more.

In tests, Gemini is able to provide information through online searches and read out the results. For example, you can ask it "What's the weather like tomorrow?" or "When is my favorite team's next game?" and it will provide answers. More interestingly, it can also generate creative lists, such as suggesting themes for a child's birthday party.

While this feature sounds great, privacy protection is also a major concern for users. If someone finds or steals your phone, can they read messages, change your schedule, or contact someone while the device is locked? After testing, the answer is no. More personalized content, such as viewing calendar events or the last text message, requires unlocking the device. Additionally, when trying to have it send a text message, although it provides several versions of the message, it does not open the messaging app for you to send it.

If you want to make the most of this feature, you need to set Gemini as your primary assistant. This feature is enabled by default, but if you don't like it, you can turn it off in the Gemini app. Simply open Gemini, click on your profile picture in the top right corner, go to "Settings," and then find the "Gemini on Lock Screen" option to turn it off.

Using Gemini to answer questions from the Android lock screen may not open up any new features, but it certainly makes accessing Gemini more convenient, especially when driving. You no longer need to reach for your phone to search for a question that suddenly comes to mind or to find quick information; now you can get most of the information you need almost completely hands-free. This update undoubtedly makes daily use more convenient, especially in situations where you need to quickly access information but are not convenient to operate the phone.
