Samsung Electronics has announced the acquisition of the UK-based AI startup Oxford Semantic Technologies to enhance its competitiveness in the field of artificial intelligence.

Oxford Semantic Technologies is renowned for its knowledge graph technology, which is akin to human thinking, organizing data into interconnected networks for rapid information retrieval and personalized recommendations. The company's flagship product, RDFox, is hailed as one of the world's fastest knowledge graph and semantic reasoning engines.

Samsung states that Oxford Semantic Technologies' products can optimize data processing, support advanced reasoning, and help devices like smartphones better understand user preferences and usage habits. This aligns closely with Samsung's recently announced plan to upgrade its Bixby virtual assistant, which will integrate proprietary AI models to provide smarter and more personalized services.

Founded in 2017, Oxford Semantic Technologies is a spin-off subsidiary of the University of Oxford, with its founding team dedicated to technology research and development at the university since 2011. Samsung began collaborating with the company in 2018 and had previously invested in it.

This acquisition is another example of Asian companies acquiring UK tech firms, following SoftBank's acquisition of the troubled AI chip company Graphcore. This move demonstrates the determination of Asian tech giants to accelerate the expansion of artificial intelligence technology and markets.

According to Oxford Semantic Technologies CEO Peter Crocker, Samsung has been involved in the development of the RDFox technology, which is based on patented modern computing techniques and can respond in real-time to complex query demands.

Samsung plans to apply Oxford Semantic Technologies' products to various devices, especially in mobile devices, TVs, and home appliances, to improve user experience and product intelligence levels.
