In today's job recruitment landscape, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming a crucial tool for screening resumes and evaluating job candidates. However, this technology also brings potential issues, particularly concerning bias. Research indicates that AI may inadvertently exacerbate biases during the recruitment process rather than eliminate them.

The application of AI in recruitment promises higher objectivity and efficiency by eliminating human biases and enhancing fairness and consistency in decision-making. Yet, the reality may not align with this promise. Studies have found that AI can subtly, and sometimes overtly, exacerbate biases in recruitment. The involvement of Human Resources (HR) professionals may intensify rather than mitigate these effects, challenging our belief in human oversight as a control and regulation mechanism for AI.

Despite the rationale for using AI in recruitment being its perceived objectivity and consistency, multiple studies have actually found the technology to be likely biased. This is because AI learns from the datasets it is trained on. If the data is flawed, so too is the AI. Biases in the data can be amplified by the human-created algorithms that support AI, which often incorporate human biases in their design.

Researchers also interviewed 17 AI developers to explore how to develop AI recruitment systems that reduce rather than exacerbate biases. Based on these interviews, researchers proposed a model where HR professionals and AI programmers would exchange information back and forth, questioning preconceived notions while examining datasets and developing algorithms.

However, the challenge in implementing this model lies in the educational, professional, and demographic differences between HR professionals and AI developers. These differences hinder effective communication, collaboration, and even mutual understanding. HR professionals are typically trained in human resources management and organizational behavior, whereas AI developers specialize in data science and technology.

If companies and the HR industry wish to address bias in AI-based recruitment, some changes are necessary:

Structured Training Programs: It is crucial to implement structured training programs for HR professionals focusing on information systems development and AI. This training should cover the basics of AI, identifying biases in AI systems, and strategies to mitigate these biases.

Enhancing Collaboration Between HR Professionals and AI Developers: Companies should strive to create teams that include both HR and AI experts. This helps bridge communication gaps and better coordinate their efforts.

Developing Culturally Relevant Datasets: This is essential for reducing biases in AI systems. HR professionals and AI developers need to collaborate to ensure the data used in AI-driven recruitment processes is diverse and representative of different demographic groups.

Establishing Guidelines and Ethical Standards: Nations need to develop guidelines and ethical standards for the use of AI in recruitment, which helps build trust and ensure fairness. Organizations should implement policies that promote transparency and accountability in AI-driven decision-making processes.

By adopting these measures, we can create a more inclusive and equitable recruitment system, leveraging the strengths of both HR professionals and AI developers.
