Apple's progress in the artificial intelligence sector appears to be lagging behind expectations. Recent reports indicate that Apple Intelligence, originally slated for release in September alongside iOS18, iPadOS18, and macOS Sequoia, may be postponed until the October update. This delay could be a source of delight for major competitor Samsung, as the number of Samsung Galaxy AI devices is nearing 200 million.
Apple officially announced Apple Intelligence at this year's WWDC, promising features such as text rewriting, image creation, and cross-application information organization. Additionally, Siri is set to be upgraded into a generative AI assistant similar to OpenAI and Microsoft. However, Bloomberg reports that Apple has delayed the initial launch to fix bugs.
Of greater concern is the potential for more severe issues with the upgraded Siri. Reports suggest that this highly anticipated new AI assistant may not be ready for the iOS and iPadOS18.1 versions and could be postponed until the end of 2024 or early 2025, possibly as part of iOS18.4.
In the meantime, Samsung's Galaxy AI is gaining momentum. According to SamMobile, Galaxy AI features have reached 100 million devices, including older models, just a few months after their release. Samsung predicted at its recent Unpacked event that the number of Galaxy AI application devices will reach 200 million by the end of the year, thanks to the sales of new foldable phones.
Although Samsung leads in the number of AI devices, the actual usage remains unclear. Some user feedback indicates that while Galaxy AI features are impressive, they are not innovative and are used infrequently.
