Recently, Google has been aggressively rolling out new online security measures aimed at more effectively removing explicit deepfake content from searches on a large scale and preventing it from occupying prominent positions in search results.
It is understood that when users successfully request the removal of unauthorized explicit fake content depicting themselves from searches, Google's system not only processes these specific contents but also works to filter out all similar explicit results, and even deletes duplicate images.
Emma Higham, a Google product manager, stated that these protective measures have achieved significant results in dealing with other types of unauthorized images and now have also established the same functionality for explicit fake images, aiming to make users feel more secure.
Moreover, Google's search ranking mechanism is also being adjusted and optimized. For searches intentionally looking for real people's deepfake images, such as the AI-generated pornographic images of Taylor Swift that circulated earlier this year, Google search will display high-quality, non-explicit content, such as related news reports. Websites that have been heavily removed due to explicit fake images will be demoted in Google's search rankings.
Google claims that the early updates this year have reduced the exposure of explicit image results in queries specifically looking for such deepfake content by over 70%. Additionally, Google is working on methods to distinguish between genuine explicit content (such as consensual nude scenes by actors) and explicit fake content, so as to ensure that legitimate images can be displayed normally while downgrading deepfakes. These updates are a continuation of Google's series of measures to address online dangers and explicit content.
As early as May this year, Google banned advertisers from promoting deepfake porn services. In 2022, Google expanded the types of "doxxing" information that can be removed from searches, and in August 2023, it began to blur pornographic images by default.
