Meta's Chief Financial Officer, Susan Li, stated on Wednesday that India has become the largest market for Meta AI usage, a noteworthy achievement given that Meta AI was introduced in India just a few months ago.
Li mentioned during Meta's second-quarter earnings call that since its launch, people have conducted billions of queries using Meta AI. She highlighted: "We've seen particularly promising signs on WhatsApp in terms of retention and engagement, which aligns with India becoming our largest market for Meta AI usage."
Meta initially introduced Meta AI in the United States last year, and the service is now available across Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and the web. In April, the company upgraded the chatbot with a new Llama3 model and launched it in over a dozen countries.
Although Meta began testing Meta AI in India around the same time, it was not made available to all users until after the Indian general elections in June.
The company faced cultural challenges in making AI more adaptable to the Indian market. In May, TechCrunch reported that Meta AI-generated images of Indian men mostly wore turbans. In July, some users on X complained that Meta AI made jokes about a particular religion but refused to do the same for other religions. These inconsistencies led Meta to adjust its algorithm to create a fair playing field for religious jokes.
Last month, the social media giant introduced support for languages other than English, including French, German, Hindi, Hindi Romanized script, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Meta AI is now available in 22 countries, including recently added Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico.
Zuckerberg also discussed during the call the computational power required to train the next-generation Llama4 model, which is ten times that of the previous model. He said: "The computational power needed to train Llama4 might be nearly ten times that used for Llama3, and future models will continue to grow."
In addition to AI, Meta has also observed promising signs in its social networks. The company noted that Threads now has "nearly" 200 million users. Meta reported last month that this competitor to Twitter/X has surpassed 175 million active users. Furthermore, Zuckerberg mentioned that the company is seeing positive outcomes in the usage of Facebook among young adults in the United States.
