Sakana AI, a company dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence through nature-inspired methods, today announced a technology that could reshape the landscape of scientific research—the "AI Scientist." This comprehensive system is capable of conducting independent scientific research, from conceiving novel ideas to writing scientific papers, all handled by AI alone.

The company states that the AI Scientist system can automatically execute the entire research lifecycle, including but not limited to generating research ideas, writing code, conducting experiments, summarizing results, and even presenting discoveries visually, culminating in a complete scientific paper. Additionally, the system can perform automated peer reviews, assessing generated papers with human-like accuracy.

The design philosophy of this system mimics the human scientific community's work, iterating and developing ideas to add new knowledge to the ever-growing knowledge base. In its initial demonstration, the AI Scientist has already made new contributions in multiple subfields of machine learning research, such as diffusion models, transformers, and deep understanding.

Sakana AI emphasizes that the AI Scientist is designed with a focus on computational efficiency, with the implementation and development cost of each paper being approximately $15. Although the first version of the system may have some flaws, its demonstrated potential and cost-effectiveness suggest that the AI Scientist has the potential to democratize research efforts and significantly accelerate scientific progress.
