Elon Musk's xAI company today released the beta versions of Grok-2 and Grok-2mini, two new AI models that have significantly improved reasoning capabilities. The new Grok AI not only generates images on the X social network but also plans to introduce a series of AI-driven new features for the platform. However, these advancements come with potential risks and challenges.

xAI introduced in their blog that Grok-2 is a major upgrade over its predecessor, Grok-1.5, with breakthroughs in chat, coding, and reasoning. Meanwhile, Grok-2mini, described as "a small but powerful sibling product," has also been launched. Both products' beta versions are now available to Premium and Premium+ users on the X platform.

It is noteworthy that Grok's image generation capabilities have garnered widespread attention. Early user feedback indicates that there seem to be no restrictions on creating images of political figures, a feature that is being exploited by many users. Given the upcoming U.S. presidential election, xAI may face pressure to limit these functionalities. Currently, Grok's generated images are based on Black Forest Labs' FLUX.1 technology.

However, this feature of Grok AI also raises concerns about the spread of misinformation. Due to the lack of strict limitations on image generation, Grok could be exploited as a tool to create false information on X and other platforms. It is currently unclear whether the images generated by Grok contain metadata indicating their AI-generated nature.

xAI also plans to deploy multiple AI-driven functionalities of Grok-2 and Grok-2mini on the X platform, including improved search capabilities, post analysis, and reply functions. This means X may soon introduce an AI-driven reply system. Additionally, xAI stated that they will release a preview version of multi-modal understanding, which will be a core part of the Grok experience on X and the API.

Although the specific details of Grok-2's functionalities have not been fully disclosed, application researcher Nima Owji claims that it has improved performance in code generation, writing, and news. Considering the previous version of Grok had multiple errors in news summarization, the industry is looking forward to the performance improvements in the new version.

xAI plans to open access to both models for developers through the enterprise API later this month, which will further expand the application scope of Grok AI, potentially bringing new challenges as well.
