The latest survey by Game Developer Collective reveals that game developers' attitudes towards generative AI remain in a "wavering" state. This survey reflects the complexity and controversy surrounding the application of AI technology in the gaming industry.
The survey shows that 30% of respondents believe generative AI can reduce development costs within the next year, while 8% expect costs to rise. 35% are skeptical, and 20% believe the impact will be minimal. In terms of quality, 17% of developers trust that AI will enhance game quality, while 35% worry it could lead to a decline, and 28% remain neutral.
The application of generative AI in the gaming industry has sparked widespread controversy. Opponents argue that AI could pose a greater environmental hazard and lead to a significant decline in product quality compared to human artists. This concern has already sparked conflicts in areas such as game art and voice acting, with strikes by members of the American actors' union SAG-AFTRA due to the "existential threat" posed by AI.
However, some companies have begun to actively apply AI technology. EA used AI to create fictional characters' appearances in the development of "Madden NFL 25," while developers like Nintendo have not directly used AI but have not completely ruled out its potential.
Another GDC survey found that 49% of developers' studios are using generative AI during development, and 31% use it outside of work. Currently, AI is primarily used by gaming companies for financial, community, and production management.
These data reflect that the gaming industry is at a critical turning point in AI application. Developers are seeking a balance between cost reduction and maintaining creative quality, while also facing ethical and employment challenges. As technology continues to evolve, the gaming industry's attitudes and strategies towards AI may continue to evolve as well.
