In Florida, USA, a man has been arrested on suspicion of creating and distributing child pornography generated by artificial intelligence, facing up to 20 charges of obscenity. This case has sparked widespread concern over the misuse of generative AI.
According to CBS12 News, the man, identified as Phillip Michael McCorkle, worked at a movie theater in Vero Beach, Florida. Last week, law enforcement officers arrested him at the theater, and a dramatic moment was captured by a TV crew as McCorkle, dressed in uniform, was handcuffed and taken away by the police, creating a striking scene.
The arrest followed multiple reports to the Indian River County Sheriff's Office alleging that McCorkle had posted child pornography images created using an AI image generator on the social app Kik. This arrest is part of a county-wide effort to combat child pornography crimes, yet McCorkle's use of generative AI for criminal activities is shocking.
With the proliferation of generative AI, the spread of such child pornography content has also caught the attention of legislators at all levels, with many pushing for legislation to ban the dissemination of such inappropriate content. However, it remains unclear how effective these legal measures will be in curbing this phenomenon.
Last year, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received 4,700 reports of child pornography generated by AI, raising concerns that some criminals even use generative AI technology to create deepfake images of real children for extortion. A study by Stanford University in 2023 also revealed hundreds of images of child sexual abuse within widely used generative AI image datasets.
Combining this information, we can see an almost uncontrollable issue. Dan Sexton, Chief Technology Officer of the Internet Watch Foundation, once said: "We found that the content was actually generated through open-source software, which was downloaded and run locally on personal computers, then modified. This issue is harder to solve."
