Recently, OpenAI has welcomed former Meta executive Irina Kofman to join the company, where she will oversee strategic initiatives.
According to Bloomberg, Kofman will report to OpenAI's technical lead, Mira Murati, and initially focus on enhancing the safety and readiness of AI. Kofman spent five years at Meta, most recently as Senior Director of Product Management for Generative AI, and her extensive experience is sure to bring new perspectives and strategies to OpenAI.
It is noteworthy that AI startups like OpenAI are actively recruiting executives from large tech companies, particularly social media platforms, to bolster their competitiveness. For instance, OpenAI appointed former Instagram and Twitter executive Kevin Weil as Chief Product Officer and former Nextdoor CEO Sarah Friar as Chief Financial Officer earlier this year. Meanwhile, competitor Anthropic hired Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger as Chief Product Officer in May.
However, OpenAI has also experienced some executive departures recently, including co-founder John Schulman and researcher Jan Leike, who both joined Anthropic. Additionally, another co-founder, Greg Brockman, announced earlier this month that he would be taking a leave until the end of 2024. He stated on social media that this would be his first real break since co-founding OpenAI nine years ago.
Regarding AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), a version of AI yet to be realized, the goal is to think and reason like humans. OpenAI recently released an update to GPT-4o, allowing developers to fine-tune it for specific business needs. This update enables tech industry developers to use custom datasets, improving the performance of AI models in specific use cases and helping them create AI tools that better align with business requirements.
