ByteDance is quietly strengthening its presence in the field of large artificial intelligence models. According to insiders, the company is secretly preparing to establish a large model research institute and actively recruiting top talent in the industry.
Reports indicate that external AI experts have already joined the institute, who will report directly to Zhang Yiming, the founder of ByteDance. Among them, Qin Yujia, formerly of Face++'s core team, and Huang Wenhao, formerly of 01.AI's core team, have confirmed their positions on ByteDance's large model team. Huang Wenhao will be responsible for technical project management and planning, reporting to Zhu Wenjia.
Zhu Wenjia began leading ByteDance's first team dedicated to large model research in January 2023. He previously served as the chief architect of Baidu's search department and briefly as the CEO of Jinri Toutiao in 2019, before transitioning to the head of product technology at TikTok in 2021.

Huang Wenhao was previously a technical co-founder at 01.AI, focusing on model pre-training and multi-modal research. His resume includes relevant work experience from Microsoft Research Asia and the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence.
However, sources close to ByteDance indicate that while the company has long-term plans to strengthen research related to large models, it has not yet decided whether to establish an independent research institution.
These actions demonstrate that ByteDance is actively positioning itself in the AI large model field, aiming to gain a competitive edge in the intense technological competition.
