According to the latest report from SensorTower, from January to August 2024, global AI application revenues surged by 51% year-on-year, surpassing $2 billion in total, with an estimated annual revenue of $3.3 billion. This surge is largely attributed to the strong performance of leading AI applications.
During this period, users worldwide flocked to download and use AI applications. North America stood out particularly, contributing 47% of the global AI application revenues, making it the top-earning market. In terms of downloads, India led with a 21% share, becoming the largest market for AI application downloads in 2024.
Among numerous AI applications, ChatGPT undoubtedly reigned supreme. From January to August 2024, ChatGPT's downloads exceeded 160 million times, generating nearly $230 million in revenue. By August, its cumulative revenue had surpassed $270 million, with over 190 million monthly active users, achieving a double crown in global downloads and active user numbers.
Another popular application, Remini, also performed well, thanks to its AI avatar generation feature, reaching 120 million downloads and surpassing $200 million in revenue. Other emerging AI applications, such as Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilo, also made it into the download charts, highlighting the intense market competition.
It is worth noting that from January to August 2024, global AI+Chatbot application downloads exceeded 630 million times, with in-app purchases nearing $580 million, more than double the full-year figure for 2023.
With the advancement of AI technology, emotionally supportive AI applications are increasingly favored by young users. For example, Character AI reached a historic high of 22 million monthly active users in August, while Talkie AI followed closely with 17 million downloads.
