Recently, OpenAI's paid services have reached a significant milestone — the number of commercial users for its ChatGPT Enterprise, Team, and Edu products has surpassed 1 million. This figure represents a substantial increase from the 600,000 users reported in April of this year.
As early as January, OpenAI's Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, revealed that ChatGPT Enterprise had 150,000 users across 260 organizations.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Enterprise on August 28 last year, followed by ChatGPT Team in January and ChatGPT Edu in May.
ChatGPT Enterprise offers businesses access to the latest models (now GPT4o), extended context windows, data analysis, and customization services. ChatGPT Team is tailored for small teams and small to medium-sized enterprises within a company, while ChatGPT Edu is designed specifically for teachers and students, offering many similar features.
Reaching 1 million users, it's also worth noting that the regular free version of ChatGPT had reached 200 million users by August this year. It's noteworthy that the day before OpenAI announced these new business figures, competitor Anthropic also launched its large enterprise product, Claude Enterprise.
In a response to media inquiries, OpenAI mentioned that a significant portion of this user growth came from regions outside the United States, particularly Germany, Japan, and the UK. Additionally, OpenAI has established partnerships with many major companies and institutions, including Arizona State University, Moderna, Rakuten, and Morgan Stanley.
Furthermore, OpenAI stated that since the launch of GPT4o mini in July this year, its API usage has doubled. This indicates a growing market interest in smaller language models, with OpenAI previously stating that GPT4o mini is the most cost-effective small model on the market.
Alongside user growth, OpenAI has also started focusing on how businesses are utilizing these subscription products. According to a survey of 4,700 commercial users, productivity has increased by 92% among businesses using ChatGPT Enterprise, Team, and Edu products. The survey showed that 88% of respondents reported these products saved them time, and 75% noted improvements in creativity and innovation. These products are primarily used for research collection, content drafting and editing, and creative ideation.
Other similar surveys have found that businesses using generative AI platforms have seen improvements in both productivity and revenue. A Google Cloud survey indicated that 74% of companies reported a return on investment within a year after using at least one generative AI application, with 45% citing improvements primarily in IT processes and employee productivity.
