At a recent business conference this week, Tadao Nagasaki, the head of OpenAI's Japan operations, sparked widespread attention with his remarks about "GPT Next." This term was widely interpreted by the public as a reference to the upcoming next-generation large language model (LLM).
However, as the discussion intensified, OpenAI stepped in to clarify this statement. The term "GPT Next" written in quotation marks on Nagasaki's slide was merely a metaphorical placeholder, used to illustrate how OpenAI's models develop exponentially over time. The spokesperson also clarified that the line graph on the slide was illustrative rather than an actual timeline of OpenAI's plans.
Previously, Nagasaki stated at the conference that "the AI model named GPT Next, set to be launched soon, will evolve nearly 100 times based on past achievements."
In the slide presented by Nagasaki at the conference, a timeline was included, showing the progression from the "GPT-3 era" in 2021, to the "GPT-4 era" in 2023, and then to the "GPT Next" era in 2024, along with a "future model" marked with "202x."
