Recently, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in South Korea announced the successful development of a technology named "Dejaview." This innovative technology utilizes real-time surveillance cameras (CCTV) and artificial intelligence (AI) to not only detect criminal activities but also predict the likelihood of crimes, marking a shift in the role of surveillance systems from mere observation to proactive crime prevention tools.

The core of the "Dejaview" technology lies in analyzing patterns of criminal occurrences. The research team found that crimes often recur under certain times, locations, and methods. By comparing the current environment and social patterns with past criminal cases, the system can predict potential crime risks. For example, if a secluded location is monitored for specific environmental factors and has a history of crimes late at night, the system will mark that area as high-risk, allowing for preemptive measures.
Additionally, ETRI has collaborated with the Seocho District in Seoul to develop a Crime Prediction Map (PCM). This map identifies high-risk crime areas by analyzing 32,656 segments of surveillance video from the past three years, categorized by time, location, and event type. With this system, police can conduct targeted surveillance, focusing their efforts on high-risk areas.
Furthermore, Dejaview includes a recidivism prediction feature for individuals, specifically analyzing the behavior patterns of high-risk individuals likely to reoffend. This technology can integrate with existing electronic monitoring systems to help identify if these individuals violate their movement restrictions.
Looking ahead, ETRI plans to expand the Dejaview technology into multiple security-related fields, including proactive response systems for major infrastructures and personal safety prevention measures. The research team aims to develop top-tier surveillance AI technology capable of real-time analysis and understanding of video information, significantly enhancing public safety levels. It is expected that Dejaview will be commercialized by the end of next year.
