Google has announced that starting from November 2023, political advertisers will be required to clearly disclose whether their ads contain content generated by artificial intelligence (AI). This decision is in response to the widespread use of synthetic content in political advertising, which includes "realistic figures or events" created using AI. Google mandates that these types of ads must include a disclaimer in a "conspicuous and prominent" location, explicitly stating that AI-generated content is used in the ad. However, minor modifications such as adjusting image brightness, editing backgrounds, or using AI to remove red-eye do not require the addition of a disclaimer. This decision also serves as a response to the trend of some political ads beginning to utilize AI for content creation.
