In today's digital age, deepfakes and synthetic media have become increasingly prevalent due to the advancements in generative artificial intelligence (gen AI). To address this challenge, many organizations are striving to enhance digital watermarking technologies to trace the origins of content.

Although no organization has yet achieved complete success, the "Content Authenticity Initiative" (CAI) is expanding its membership. CAI has announced that Amazon has become a new member of its steering committee.

CAI is an open technical standard organization under the Linux Foundation, aiming to combat the prevalence of online misinformation through the establishment of technical standards. The organization, co-founded by Adobe, is responsible for maintaining the "content credentials" method, which aims to enhance the transparency of digital content origins. Content credentials can show how and when a piece of content was generated or modified. CAI hopes to develop content credentials into an industry standard.

Upon joining CAI, Amazon has committed to integrating content credentials with its enterprise AI image generator, Titan Image Generator, versions one and two. Amazon states that through content credentials, consumers will be able to verify the authenticity of the origin of AI-generated content.

Additionally, Amazon plans to add origin tools to its AWS Elemental MediaConvert service, a file processing service for transcoding content at scale for broadcast and multiscreen delivery. This will enable customers such as news agencies, sports broadcasters, and content aggregators to verify the origins of their video content when sharing it.

Vasi Philomin, Vice President of Generative AI at AWS, stated that images generated by Titan will have invisible watermarks by default, which will help reduce the spread of misinformation. He also noted that joining CAI and adopting content credentials marks a significant step forward for Amazon in promoting responsible AI innovation.

However, CAI's membership list has drawn attention from some digital content authentication organizations. In July, the digital content authentication organization Numbers Protocol and other blockchain and AI organizations co-founded the "Creative Origin Alliance," a "transparent and decentralized alternative" aimed at providing equal voice for all members and allowing creators to participate in decision-making.

The formation of this alliance was due to an update in Adobe's service terms, which sparked concerns in the creative community about major corporations. The Creative Origin Alliance aims to advocate for smaller voices in terms of privacy and open-source technology, positioning itself as a "giant" to CAI.
