French AI startup Mistral announced a series of significant updates on September 17, aimed at attracting developers and expanding its market share. The company, valued at $6 billion, has introduced new initiatives including a free trial package, substantial price reductions, and the addition of multimodal capabilities, demonstrating its ambition in the increasingly competitive AI model provider space.

Mistral has launched a free package through its API service platform, la Plateforme, allowing developers to experiment, evaluate, and prototype without charge. Although production environment usage may require an upgrade to a paid commercial tier, this move undoubtedly lowers the entry barrier for developers. This trend is similar to strategies employed by giants like OpenAI and Google, reflecting the commoditization of advanced large language models (LLMs) in the developer world.

Additionally, Mistral has significantly reduced the prices for accessing its AI models through API endpoints. Prices for Mistral NeMo, Mistral Small, and Codestral have been cut by more than 50%, while Mistral Large has seen a 33% reduction. Mistral has introduced its first multimodal model, Pixtral12B, into its free consumer AI chatbot, le Chat, capable of handling both images and text simultaneously. This feature upgrade makes Mistral's product line more comprehensive, helping to attract a broader user base.
