Recently, foreign media reports suggested that ByteDance is accelerating its efforts to develop its own AI chips in order to reduce reliance on Nvidia's expensive chips.
The reports claimed that ByteDance plans to collaborate with TSMC, with an expectation to mass-produce two self-developed AI chips by 2026, and has already reserved production for hundreds of thousands of these chips. More notably, the reports indicated that ByteDance aims to achieve four times the computational performance of a single H100 chip with its self-developed chips, at similar costs.
In response, ByteDance quickly addressed these reports. A company spokesperson stated that the media coverage was inaccurate. The spokesperson acknowledged that ByteDance is indeed exploring chip development, primarily focused on cost optimization for recommendation and advertising services, and all projects are fully compliant with relevant trade regulations. However, they emphasized that these efforts are still in the early stages.
