Recently, AI startup Runway announced a collaboration with renowned film production company Lionsgate. This news has caused quite a stir in the film industry as it marks the first direct agreement between a major film company and an AI video model supplier.

Headquartered in New York City and backed by companies like Google, Runway's technology has already been used by some filmmakers in Hollywood, such as those behind the Oscar-winning film "Everything Everywhere All at Once." However, this collaboration will further advance its presence in the film production sector.

In this partnership, Runway will leverage Lionsgate's extensive library of over 20,000 films and TV shows, including "The Hunger Games" and the upcoming "Metropolis," to build a customized AI video production and editing model.

This model is fundamentally designed to assist Lionsgate Studios, its filmmakers, directors, and other creative talents in enhancing their work. The generated film videos can be further iterated using Runway's controllable toolset.

Initially, this technology will be applied to storyboard creation, background design, and special effects, especially for films with extensive action sequences. These scenes are often time-consuming, costly, and carry certain risks, and Runway's AI technology is expected to bring efficiency improvements to these production processes.

Although most AI video models currently can only generate short clips of a few seconds and have a complex control process for output, they can create realistic animations in a short time, suitable for various filmmakers. While creating a complete film independently with AI is not yet feasible in the short term, AI technology has already begun to play a significant role in the production and creation of short films.

Cristóbal Valenzuela, CEO of Runway, stated that they are committed to providing the most powerful and effective tools for artists, creators, and production companies to enhance the creative process and bring new ways of storytelling. This marks the continuation of art history as a history of technology, and Runway is continuously striving to build more transformative artistic media.

Additionally, shortly after this announcement, Runway launched a new API for third-party developers to integrate AI video capabilities into their applications. Meanwhile, Runway is also hosting its third short film competition, inviting independent filmmakers to create videos using its AI models, demonstrating its support for creators.
