It is said that the Unit2 reactor at Three Mile Island overheated due to the loss of cooling water, leading to that historic nuclear accident. To this day, the reactor remains decommissioned. Constellation Energy closed the connected Unit1 reactor in 2019, primarily due to economic factors. However, they have now decided to restart Unit1, which is expected to provide an additional 835 megawatts to the Pennsylvania power grid, while also creating approximately 3,400 jobs and contributing at least $16 billion to the local economy.
To give Three Mile Island a fresh start, the plant will also be renamed the "Cray Clean Energy Center," in tribute to Chris Crane, the former CEO of Constellation Energy's parent company. Joe Dominguez, the current President and CEO of Constellation Energy, stated that before the plant was closed for economic reasons, it was one of the safest and most reliable nuclear power plants on the grid. They hope to restart the plant under its new name and mission.
However, restarting is not a simple process. Restoring the plant requires significant investment, including replacing or refurbishing turbines, generators, main power transformers, and cooling and control systems. Additionally, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will conduct a comprehensive safety and environmental review to ensure compliance before issuing a restart license. The reactor is expected to go online in 2028, and Constellation Energy also plans to apply to extend the plant's operating life until at least 2054.
It is worth noting that with the surge in power demand from tech giants like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta, and Apple, the power consumption of data centers is expected to increase by 160% by 2030. However, this has also raised concerns about environmental impact, with recent analysis suggesting that these large companies' data center emissions could be 662% higher than official reports.
