Recently, an account of OpenAI on the social platform X was hacked, resulting in the dissemination of a fake cryptocurrency advertisement.
The incident occurred at 6:24 PM on Monday. The account, @OpenAINewsroom, dedicated to sharing OpenAI news and boasting nearly 54,000 followers, suddenly posted a tweet that has since been deleted, promoting a token named “$OPENAI”.
The tweet claimed, "We are thrilled to announce $OPENAI: This token bridges the gap between artificial intelligence and blockchain technology." It also mentioned that all OpenAI users had the opportunity to claim the initial supply of $OPENAI and that holders of the token would gain access to all future OpenAI beta projects.
Surprisingly, the tweet included a link to a fake OpenAI website, which was not the genuine openai.com.
Upon visiting the fake site, I found a section claiming to offer $OPENAI cryptocurrency. After clicking the relevant button, the site requested that I connect a crypto wallet, which I did not proceed with. We caution everyone, if you inadvertently visit this site, do not connect your crypto wallet to avoid being scammed.
As of now, the promotional tweet for the cryptocurrency has been deleted, and @OpenAINewsroom responded with a tweet: "Comments were closed due to malicious links. Good luck to all!" It is worth noting that the account was just launched earlier this month and has already encountered such an unfortunate event.
This situation serves as a stark reminder that cybersecurity issues remain critical, and we must remain vigilant and not readily trust unfamiliar links and information. We hope all users stay alert to avoid falling victim to such scams.
