Recently, it has been reported that AI startup Anthropic is in preliminary talks with investors to raise a new round of funding, with a potential valuation as high as $40 billion.
This news comes from The Information, where an anonymous existing investor revealed that the company is discussing with investors. However, these negotiations are still in the early stages, and it remains unclear whether investors will agree to such a high valuation.
Anthropic plans to present to investors at Morgan Stanley's Private Technology Conference next month. Typically, startups do not involve investment banks to push for financing, but Anthropic has adopted this strategy in a complex financing process. Notably, Anthropic has previously relied mainly on corporate investors for financing, rather than solely on venture capital firms.
The news of Anthropic seeking financing comes shortly after competitor OpenAI announced plans to raise $6.5 billion at a valuation of $150 billion.
So far, Anthropic has raised approximately $7.6 billion, including pre-committed funds. The largest investor is Amazon, which has invested $2.75 billion and $1.25 billion in Anthropic this year.
In the new round of financing, Amazon may once again become an investor, closely tied to their deepening partnership. Currently, Microsoft and Apple are investing and collaborating with OpenAI, while Google is developing its own AI model, and Amazon has chosen to partner with Anthropic.
Anthropic's partnership is also reflected in the availability of its large language models on Amazon's Bedrock platform. Previously, there were also reports that Anthropic would provide technical support for the new version of Amazon's Alexa smart assistant.
Founded in 2021, Anthropic's founders are all former executives of OpenAI. The company focuses on creating interpretable, secure, and guided AI systems, prioritizing ethical guidelines to reduce harmful or unpredictable outputs.
