At the recent Gemini at Work event, Google executives announced plans to begin rolling out Gemini-based intelligent automation features in Google Workspace next month.
As Gemini AI continues to mature, these intelligent agents will gradually cover numerous enterprises using Google's cloud productivity platform. Google Workspace currently boasts at least 8 million paid users and holds nearly 85% of the cloud work application market, demonstrating its strong market influence.
Aparna Pappu, Vice President of Google Workspace, stated that they are adopting a "crawl, walk, run" strategy to gradually introduce AI agents to more users. Pappu mentioned that users can view these intelligent assistants as building blocks, training them to adapt to their work habits. Ultimately, these assistants will evolve into more powerful intelligent agents.
This week, Google also announced the integration of the standalone Gemini chat application into Workspace for paid accounts such as Business, Enterprise, and Frontline. Users can now use Gemini to summarize emails in Gmail, find information across multiple documents in Google Drive, or even input natural language prompts in Sheets to generate custom charts.
Unlike other platforms focused on specific workflows, Google Workspace caters to a broad and diverse audience. Pappu also mentioned the AI Teammate Chip showcased at Google I/O, an AI colleague capable of completing specific tasks, which Google hopes to scale within Workspace.
Starting next month, Google will also gradually roll out workflow automation features driven by Gemini. This feature will allow users to set up automatic tasks, such as automatically reading emails or documents, categorizing them, and performing corresponding actions. For example, if a user receives an email containing an invoice, Gemini can identify it as related to finance and budgeting and send the invoice to the appropriate team for payment. This coordination of workflows is also one of the basic building blocks of AI agents.
In the past month, many enterprises have begun to introduce AI agent features, and Google is undoubtedly a significant player in this trend. Google Workspace users, including small and large businesses, can leverage these new features to enhance work efficiency. At the event, Google demonstrated how its AI models help customers save time, increase employee satisfaction, and alleviate tedious daily tasks. Pappu noted that customers using Gemini have already seen significant productivity gains and reduced time spent on trivial tasks.
