OpenAI has announced a partnership with Hearst, the media group behind publications such as the Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle, Esquire, Cosmopolitan, and Elle. Under this partnership, products like OpenAI's ChatGPT and SearchGPT will be able to display content from over 20 magazine brands and more than 40 newspapers.
Debbie Chirichella, President of Hearst Magazines, stated that through collaboration with OpenAI, Hearst will be able to transform the future of magazine content. The media company also noted that Hearst content in ChatGPT will include appropriate citations and link users to the original sources at Hearst.
This partnership is the latest in a recent trend of media companies partnering with AI startups for content collaboration. OpenAI has previously established similar partnerships with Condé Nast, News Corp, and Reddit.
However, as AI-generated content becomes increasingly prevalent, other news publications and media institutions are actively trying to protect their businesses. Some publications have filed lawsuits against OpenAI and its major supporter, Microsoft, alleging copyright infringement.
OpenAI has expressed disagreement with the descriptions of these events by the publications.
