In 2024, Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills have become the most sought-after capability for IT managers in the UK. A survey conducted by open-source software company Red Hat revealed that 81% of IT managers reported difficulties in recruiting AI specialists, a 9% increase compared to a survey in October 2023. This survey, conducted in August, involved 609 global IT managers from companies with over 500 employees, including at least 100 from the UK.

The survey results indicate that AI skills, including data science, large language models, and generative AI, have surpassed strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities in business, becoming the most in-demand skills. Another report from June noted that UK hiring managers are willing to pay an average salary premium of 45% for candidates with skills in natural language processing, AI content creation, and chatbot development.
Sam Marland, Senior Manager of Solution Architecture at Red Hat, pointed out that IT managers' strong demand for AI skills stems from their recognition of the powerful potential of consumer-grade chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini, and their eagerness to apply these technologies within their own businesses. He mentioned that this demand is akin to the rise of mobile computing, as companies strive to grasp the future changes brought by AI and how to leverage data to enhance customer experiences.
In addition to AI skills, the demand for cybersecurity skills has also increased, from 69% to 75%. Marland attributed this trend to the frequent occurrence of high-profile cyber-attacks and the increasing number of state actors exploiting system vulnerabilities under global tensions. He noted that generative AI has lowered the barriers to conducting cyber-attacks, enabling both less skilled attackers and highly skilled defense experts to launch more complex attacks.
Overall, the demand for technical talent in enterprises is becoming more comprehensive, no longer focusing solely on single technical skills but on the broader impact of technology on areas such as sustainable development. Additionally, due to budget constraints, managers are beginning to seek technical solutions to fill the talent gaps in AI and cybersecurity.
