At the recent NVIDIA AI Summit, CEO Jensen Huang expressed high praise for India's achievements in artificial intelligence (AI). He noted that over 2,000 AI companies in India are participating in NVIDIA's incubation program, along with more than 100,000 developers trained in AI.
This figure represents a significant portion of the over 650,000 developers worldwide, showcasing India's strategic layout in AI technology development. Huang referred to this as "sovereign AI," where countries choose to independently build their own AI infrastructure to safeguard data security.
India is rapidly emerging as an AI production hub across various industries, particularly with the rise of numerous startups. India's multilingual and multicultural background provides fertile ground for AI technology development. This year, the number of startups in India has surpassed 100,000, a dramatic increase from fewer than 500 in 2016, indicating strong growth momentum.
At the summit, approximately 50 Indian startups shared their AI innovations in areas such as customer service, sports media, healthcare, and robotics. CoRover.ai in Bangalore developed a conversational AI platform based on large language models, now serving over 1 billion users. Their multimodal chatbot, AskDISHA, provided by Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation, handles over 150,000 user queries daily and has served more than 175 million passengers.
Additionally, NVIDIA mentioned that Mumbai-based VideoVerse, with NVIDIA's technology support, enhances content creation in the sports media industry, helping clients quickly generate highlights and improve viewer experience. Startups like Fluid AI and Karya are also actively leveraging AI to boost corporate efficiency and enable low-income community members to earn extra income through language tasks.
India is heavily investing in sovereign AI, partnering with NVIDIA to build multilingual AI models, allowing more people to interact with technology in their native languages. Notably, NVIDIA has introduced a small language model supporting Hindi, which has been applied by Indian IT services company Tech Mahindra in the development of the Indus2.0AI model, focusing on Hindi and its various dialects.
To support the development of AI technology, Indian cloud infrastructure providers and server manufacturers are increasing data center capabilities. By the end of the year, NVIDIA GPU deployments are expected to increase nearly tenfold compared to 18 months ago. These measures will provide robust computing resources for Indian businesses, startups, and research institutions, driving AI innovation.
