Anthropic's Claude chatbot can now write and run JavaScript code, assisting users in performing complex mathematical calculations and data analysis. This feature has been rolled out in the preview stage, allowing Claude to execute calculations and analyze data from files such as spreadsheets and PDFs, presenting the results as interactive visualizations.

Anthropic's analytical tool can be seen as an embedded code sandbox where Claude can perform complex mathematical operations, analyze data, and iterate through different ideas before sharing the answers. This tool can systematically process user data, gradually cleaning, exploring, and analyzing it until the correct results are obtained.

Anthropic has provided several potentially useful examples. For instance, product managers can upload sales data and ask Claude to provide performance analysis for specific countries, while engineers can supply Claude with monthly financial data and have it create dashboards highlighting key trends.

Google offers a similar feature for its Gemini model, called "code execution," which allows the model to generate and run Python code, iterating on the results to learn. OpenAI's flagship model can also write and execute code through a feature the company calls "advanced data analysis."

Starting Thursday, Anthropic's analytical tool is available to all Claude users on the web. To enable it, log in to Claude.ai and click here.
