Recently, AI search company Perplexity has officially launched its newly developed Election Information Center, aimed at providing voters with reliable voting information. This platform will offer users AI-generated answers to voting-related questions, candidate summaries, and will track real-time voting results on Election Day, November 5th, with data sourced from the Associated Press.
Perplexity states that the data provided by the Voter Information Center, including voting requirements, locations, and times, is based on information from the nonprofit organization Democracy Works. Notably, this organization also supports Google's related features. Additionally, Perplexity ensures that its generated election-related answers come from a series of rigorously screened, trustworthy sources such as Ballotpedia and major news agencies.
Users can simply enter their address or city to obtain specific content about the ballot in their area. On Election Day, users can also monitor real-time election statuses for the presidency, the U.S. Senate, and the House of Representatives, with voting percentages and leading candidates clearly visible.
However, during testing, some AI-generated candidate summaries from Perplexity showed errors, such as failing to mention Robert F. Kennedy, who had dropped out of the race. Moreover, a candidate named "Future Mrs. Potus" appeared on the platform, but clicking on it displayed a summary of Vice President Kamala Harris along with some meme images. Regarding these issues, Perplexity spokesperson Sarah Plotnick stated that the company is investigating the causes of these errors.
It is worth noting that Perplexity is not the only company attempting to use AI to provide voter information. Other major AI companies, such as ChatGPT, Meta AI, and Google Gemini, tend to redirect voter information queries to other resources, indicating that the accuracy of generative AI still faces challenges in high-risk situations.
