Elon Musk's xAI announced today that its application programming interface (API) is now open to the public, offering $25 in free API credits each month until the end of the year. This API enables developers to build applications on xAI's Grok large language model (LLM).

xAI's API pricing is set at $5 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, slightly higher compared to OpenAI's GPT-4o model and Anthropic's Claude3.5Sonnet model. However, the free $25 credit could be enough to entice some developers to at least explore xAI's tools and platform.

The xAI API also supports "function calls," allowing the LLM to receive commands and access functionalities of other connected applications and services. Additionally, xAI's API is compatible with OpenAI and Anthropic's SDKs, making it easy for developers to switch these models to xAI's Grok-beta or other models on the platform.

xAI recently launched the "Colossus" supercluster in Memphis, Tennessee, consisting of 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, for training its new models. A new Grok model is on the horizon, described in xAI's blog post as a "preview of the new Grok model currently in the final stages of development."

While the $25 free credit may not be a significant enticement, it could be enough to attract some developers to at least explore xAI's tools and platform. With the official opening of xAI's API, developers can look forward to more features and updates.
