Alibaba DAMO Academy (Hupan Laboratory) has announced a significant breakthrough in Beijing: the development of the "Eight Views" meteorological large model based on a global weather model. This innovative model, named "Eight Views" (symbolizing "insight from all directions, observing all phenomena"), has elevated weather forecasting accuracy to unprecedented levels.
The most notable feature of this meteorological large model is its ultra-high precision. By integrating regional multi-source data, the model achieves an ultra-fine prediction resolution of 1 kilometer × 1 kilometer × 1 hour. In practical applications, the model has significantly improved the accuracy of key meteorological indicators compared to traditional forecasts: irradiance by 40%, wind speed by 27%, cloud cover by 24%, and temperature by 11.8%.
Technically, the Decision Intelligence Laboratory of DAMO Academy has developed a unique pre-training and twin MAE masked autoencoder structure, leveraging years of accumulated expertise in mathematical modeling, time series forecasting, and explainable AI. This enables the model to extract stable features from highly volatile weather data, achieving more accurate weather predictions. By integrating station data, meteorological observations, radar images, satellite images, and open-source terrain, among other multi-source and multi-modal data, the model continuously optimizes its prediction results.
The model has achieved significant practical success. In the field of new energy, the Eight Views meteorological large model has assisted the State Grid Shandong Electric Power Dispatching Center in successfully predicting multiple extreme weather events, improving the accuracy of new energy power generation forecasts to 96% and power load forecasts to over 98%, providing strong support for the stable operation of new power systems.
Looking ahead, the Eight Views meteorological large model will continue to enhance its prediction capabilities for key indicators such as cloud cover and precipitation, with its application scope expected to expand to multiple fields including aviation warning, agricultural production, and sports event preparation, offering more precise decision support across various industries. This breakthrough not only marks a new stage in China's meteorological forecasting technology but also opens new avenues for the industrial application of meteorological services.
