Anysphere, the parent company of AI code editor Cursor, announced today the acquisition of AI programming assistant Supermaven. The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed. This acquisition comes at a time when Anysphere is facing acquisition interests from investors such as Benchmark, Index Ventures, and Andreessen Horowitz, with a valuation of up to $2.5 billion.

According to Michael Truell, CEO of Cursor, this acquisition will help the company launch a new version of the Tab AI model, which will feature faster response times, enhanced contextual awareness, and smarter handling of long sequences of code. It is worth noting that Supermaven's existing plugins will continue to be maintained, but the team will primarily focus on Cursor's development in the future.

Supermaven was founded by Jacob Jackson, a former co-founder of Tabnine. After selling Tabnine to Codata in 2019, Jackson interned at OpenAI until 2022. Supermaven was officially launched in February this year and is an innovative AI programming platform. Its proprietary generative AI model, Babble, not only understands a vast amount of code but also boasts extremely low latency performance due to its custom architecture. As of September, the platform has attracted over 35,000 developers and successfully raised $12 million in funding, with investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, OpenAI co-founder John Schulman, and Perplexity co-founder Denis Yarats.

Jackson stated that although Supermaven was not originally planned to be acquired, the merger with Cursor will allow the team to better integrate the editor interface with AI model design, creating a more practical product.

According to market research firm Polaris Research, the AI programming tools market is expected to reach $27.17 billion by 2032. The latest GitHub developer survey shows that the majority of respondents are already using AI tools to some extent, with over 1.8 million individual users and approximately 50,000 companies paying for GitHub Copilot.

Despite the proliferation of AI programming assistant startups, including Augment, Codeium, Magic, and Poolside, Cursor has become one of the most popular choices. Reliable sources reveal that Cursor currently generates $4 million in monthly revenue. Founded in 2022 by Truell, Asif, Lunnemark, and Sanger, Anysphere has recently attracted close attention from the investment community.
