Google recently launched a brand new online chess game, with the biggest highlight being its ability to use generative AI to provide personalized customization for the chess pieces.

The gameplay is quite innovative; users can input a brief description to generate the appearance of the white pieces they desire. The system will then automatically create a related themed black piece for the opponent. For example, when I requested sci-fi themed pieces, the system designed a fantasy themed piece for the opponent. This setup adds a lot of fun to the game.

Although the game's features are relatively simple, the user experience is quite smooth. Players can choose from three difficulty settings and two time controls; however, the game currently does not offer the ability to review past games or see captured pieces.

Additionally, the default perspective of the game is isometric view. While it looks very cool, most chess applications use a top-down view, which may make the isometric perspective feel a bit unfamiliar to players. However, players can switch to a top-down view in the game settings.

The release of this game coincides with the start of the 2024 Chess Championship, where defending champion Ding Liren is fiercely competing against 18-year-old Gukesh D. The game is sponsored by Google, which is taking this opportunity to launch a series of new chess products and initiatives.

Google also announced that it will soon launch a new chess robot, which will be integrated into its Gemini platform. Users can play against the AI by inputting moves, and Gemini will update the board in real-time during the game.

However, Google has not disclosed whether the AI will further enhance its intelligence in other aspects of chess. Currently, the AI still has issues with accuracy when recognizing uploaded chess position images. This feature is expected to be available to Gemini premium users in December.
