Recently, a startup called “/dev/agents,” founded by former Android executives, has garnered widespread attention. The company's goal is to develop an operating system specifically designed for AI agents, aiming to achieve the “Android moment for AI.” Key figures include former Google Android product management vice president Hugo Barra, who stated that the new company will revisit their “Android roots.”
Currently, many tech companies like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI are actively promoting the concept of AI agents, which are considered the next significant leap in AI tools. These AI agents promise to perform tasks and make decisions autonomously with minimal human intervention.
In response, David Singleton, co-founder and CEO of /dev/agents and former vice president of Android engineering at Google, stated in an interview with Bloomberg, “We can see the potential of AI agents, but as developers, it is incredibly challenging to build good products.” He pointed out that the industry urgently needs a moment similar to Android to propel AI development.
/dev/agents is working on developing a cloud-based “next-generation AI agent operating system,” with the goal of enabling “trusted agents to collaborate with users across all devices.” Singleton mentioned in a post on the X platform that AI agents require new user interface paradigms, reimagined privacy models, and a platform that makes it easier for developers to build practical agents. Hugo Barra, serving as the Chief Product Officer, was the public face of Android and responsible for the project's early development. He later worked at Xiaomi and held leadership roles in Facebook's Oculus VR team.
Among the core team at /dev/agents is Chief Technology Officer Ficus Kirkpatrick, an early Android engineer who previously served as vice president of AR and VR at Meta; and Chief Design Officer Nicholas Jitkoff, who was involved in the design of ChromeOS. With the rapid advancement of AI technology, the emergence of /dev/agents could provide developers with a more user-friendly platform, thereby promoting the application and popularization of AI agents.
