The AI startup ElevenLabs launched a new feature called GenFM on Wednesday, which allows users to upload various types of content to generate multi-channel podcasts, similar to Google's NotebookLM.
This feature is now available in the ElevenLabs Reader iOS app, supporting 32 languages, including English, Hindi, Portuguese, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, and Japanese.
When using GenFM, users can first upload YouTube videos, text, or documents, and the app will automatically select two voices to create the podcast.
ElevenLabs offers over ten voices for users to choose from. As the app prepares the AI-generated podcast, users may see some interesting prompts, such as “Add some pauses” and “Insert some filler words.” In contrast to many current tools that help people eliminate “um” and “ah,” ElevenLabs chooses to add some human-like elements to its AI-generated podcasts.
Jack McDermott, ElevenLabs' head of mobile growth, stated in an interview, “We discussed the extent to which we could introduce filler words or overlay sounds similar to human conversation, such as ‘um,’ ‘ah,’ ‘uh-huh,’ laughter, and breathing. Our goal is to find the right balance between natural human conversation and content usability.”
He also noted that excellent long-form podcasts often feature fewer distractions, with a more natural and deeper flow of conversation being the experience they aim for, making audio narratives more accessible across different voices and languages.
In the future, ElevenLabs plans to support more customization options and allow users to add multiple sources to create generative AI podcasts. In September, Google launched the AI-generated conversation feature for NotebookLM, adding the ability for users to customize podcast output a month later.
Earlier this month, ElevenLabs also announced a $11 million investment in the Polish startup ecosystem and opened a research and development center in Warsaw to attract local AI talent. Meanwhile, the company is expanding into India, having hired a business lead and is building a team. Additionally, ElevenLabs has launched conversational AI agents for its clients.
