The Italian Data Protection Authority (GPDP) recently issued a warning to the local media group GEDI, stating that its cooperation agreement with OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, may violate EU privacy protection laws. Under this agreement, GEDI plans to provide its Italian-language news content to ChatGPT subscribers, while OpenAI would use GEDI's news archives to enhance the accuracy of its products.

Personal Privacy, Privacy Leakage Work

The GPDP emphasized that GEDI's digital archive contains a large amount of personal information, including many details and even sensitive data. The authority clearly stated that it is not permitted for third parties to use this data for AI training without strict permission. If GEDI shares personal data from its archives with OpenAI, it could violate EU privacy protection regulations, leading to a series of legal consequences, including potential fines.

GEDI is one of Italy's major media groups, publishing important daily newspapers such as La Repubblica and Turin News. In September, GEDI announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI, intending to provide Italian-language news content to ChatGPT users through this agreement. According to the agreement, ChatGPT users will be able to access summaries, content, and links to sources of these news articles.

Currently, representatives from GEDI and OpenAI have not publicly responded to the warning from the Data Protection Authority.
