On December 7, 2024, the National Radio and Television Administration's Department of Online Audio-Visual Services issued a notice regarding the management of AI "modification" videos, clearly stating the need to address the rampant phenomenon of AI "modified" videos. Recently, several classic films and television dramas have been altered using AI tools, such as "Empresses in the Palace" being turned into an "action movie" and "Dream of the Red Chamber" being changed into a "martial arts drama," with even absurd scenes of Sun Wukong riding a motorcycle. These "modified" videos not only mock classic culture but also provoke public backlash against traditional cultural values.

The management notice points out that such videos, in pursuit of traffic, shamelessly alter classic intellectual properties, deviating from the original spirit of the works and potentially infringing on copyright. Therefore, the National Radio and Television Administration has proposed strict management requirements, urging provincial bureaus to oversee short video platforms within their jurisdictions to promptly clean up such content and provide feedback on rectification by December 10.

Furthermore, the National Radio and Television Administration emphasized that platforms must strictly implement review requirements for generative artificial intelligence content to ensure that large models or AI special effects are not misused. Platforms must prominently indicate the generated AI content to prevent misleading the public or infringing on rights.
