In the United States, despite the clear benefits of recycling, the recycling rate has stagnated in recent years. To address this challenge, AMP Robotics has launched an artificial intelligence system called AMP ONE to help waste management facilities sort waste more efficiently. Recently, the company completed a $91 million Series D funding round to further promote this technology.

According to Matanya Horowitz, founder of AMP Robotics, the recycling rate was about 32% in 2018, while data from early 2024 shows that only 21% of residential recyclable waste is being reused. This situation not only impacts the environment but also increases the cost of waste management. Traditional waste sorting relies on manual labor, which is often performed under harsh conditions with significant safety risks, leading to high employee turnover and staff shortages.

The advantage of the AMP ONE system lies in its ability to utilize deep learning technology to accurately identify and sort various types of waste, including items that are easily overlooked during human sorting. The system can process mixed recyclables and even sift through waste to pick out reusable materials. In one test, AMP ONE achieved over 90% operational time at a waste management facility, requiring minimal human intervention.

The introduction of this system can reduce landfill waste by over 60%, enhance resource recovery rates, and decrease reliance on landfills. Moreover, AMP's technology not only lowers sorting costs but also improves sorting accuracy and efficiency. As more AMP ONE systems are deployed, the entire recycling industry will benefit from its networked intelligent resources.

Although waste sorting still relies on active participation from individuals, AMP's solution provides a new avenue for those who struggle with proper waste disposal. In the future, we may no longer need to worry about waste sorting issues, as AI assistance will effectively improve these "lazy" habits.
