OpenAI recently officially launched its brand new hyper-realistic AI video generation software, Sora Turbo. Nearly ten months after its initial showcase, Sora Turbo has undergone several significant upgrades.

Sora is now available to paid users of ChatGPT Plus and Pro, with a subscription fee of $20 per month or $200 annually. The service covers the United States and most regions outside the EU and the UK.

Sora Turbo allows users to generate various videos ranging from 10 to 20 seconds in length using text input or static images. It supports different resolutions of 480p, 720p, and 1080p, as well as various aspect ratios including 16:9, 1:1, and 9:16.

OpenAI has designed a brand new user interface for Sora Turbo, enabling users to easily view their generated video works in a grid or list view.

Additionally, Sora Turbo offers a feature called "Storyboard," which allows users to create multiple interconnected clips in a timeline view. This feature facilitates smoother transitions between clips, and users can freely adjust the way clips switch according to their needs, creating a more fluid visual experience.

For ChatGPT Plus users, up to 50 videos can be generated per month at a maximum resolution of 720P and a duration of 5 seconds, with a watermark. Pro users, on the other hand, can achieve higher resolutions and longer durations, generating up to 500 videos quickly, along with unlimited slow-generation video services at 1080P, 20 seconds, without watermarks.

OpenAI also announced plans to release tailored pricing options for different user needs by early 2025.

Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, announced this news during a YouTube live stream, as part of the company's "OpenAI12DAY" holiday-themed announcement series.

Although Sora Turbo can generate impressive and extremely realistic videos, Brownlee also pointed out that the software occasionally exhibits hallucination phenomena when generating content, such as randomly producing blurred text and unnatural physical effects. Notably, OpenAI has implemented strict limitations on generating real human likenesses, violence, and explicit content.

Furthermore, the launch of Sora Turbo has been accompanied by controversy, as some early testers leaked the software on Hugging Face due to dissatisfaction with OpenAI's handling. Nevertheless, as competitors like Runway and Luma AI continue to release new AI video generation tools, Sora Turbo's market prospects will face greater challenges.
