During the 12-day "ship-mas" product launch series, OpenAI officially introduced the highly anticipated Sora video generation AI model. This innovative technology is now live on Sora.com, available to ChatGPT subscribers in the United States and most other countries.
Sora Turbo supports the generation of videos with a maximum resolution of 1080p and a duration of up to 20 seconds, offering various aspect ratio options including landscape, portrait, and square. Users can create content using text, images, and videos, and can also expand, mix, and generate new content using their own materials.
Sora also offers a brand new interface and tools, including a storyboard tool that helps users create more easily with text, images, and videos.
Well-known tech reviewer MKBHD has already provided an initial experience of the product, unveiling a glimpse of its capabilities for users.
In terms of subscription plans, OpenAI offers flexible options: ChatGPT Plus subscribers can generate 50 priority videos per month, with a maximum resolution of 720p and a duration of 5 seconds. The $200 monthly Pro subscription offers a more luxurious experience, providing unlimited generation, 500 priority videos, a resolution increase to 1080p, a duration extension to 20 seconds, and the ability to download videos without watermarks, along with support for generating five videos simultaneously.
In product design, OpenAI showcased impressive community features. The platform provides an exploration page where users can browse AI videos generated by other creators using Sora. Among these features, the "shot" function stands out, allowing users to generate videos based on a series of prompts. Additionally, the "mix" feature, which converts photos into videos and fine-tunes videos with text, offers creators unprecedented flexibility.
Safety and ethics are top priorities for OpenAI when launching Sora. All videos generated by Sora will have a visible watermark by default and will include C2PA metadata to indicate AI generation. Before uploading content, the platform requires users to confirm that it does not contain minors, violence, or pornography, as well as copyrighted material. Rohan Sahai, the product lead for Sora, admitted that balancing creative expression and content safety is an ongoing challenge.
It is worth noting that even without a ChatGPT subscription, users can still browse videos generated by others using Sora. However, in most parts of Europe and the UK, the official promotion of the product may still take some time.
