Amazon recently announced the establishment of a new research and development lab in San Francisco, named the "Amazon AGI SF Lab," which aims to focus on building the foundational capabilities of intelligent agents.

The lab will be led by David Luan, co-founder of the AI startup Adept, with the goal of developing intelligent agents that can act in both digital and physical worlds and handle complex workflows involving the use of computers, web browsers, and code interpreters.
Luan and Pieter Abbeel, head of Amazon's robotics research, stated in a jointly written article: "Our work will build on the foundation of Amazon's broader AGI team." An Amazon spokesperson also revealed that Abbeel will work closely with Luan and the AGI SF Lab in the future.
They indicated that the lab's initial focus will be on several key research areas that will enable AI agents to perform real-world tasks, learn from human feedback, self-correct, and infer human goals. The lab will consist of Adept employees, and Amazon plans to hire dozens of researchers from fields such as quantitative finance, physics, and mathematics.
It is noteworthy that Adept is a company that was established only two years ago, dedicated to developing AI models capable of performing operations across various software tools using natural language. Its vision is to create an "AI team member" that can utilize multiple software tools and APIs. Currently, many businesses are also exploring this direction. According to a forecast by Emergen Research, the agent AI industry is expected to be worth $31 billion by the end of this year, with 82% of organizations planning to integrate AI agents within the next three years due to the potential efficiency gains.
Additionally, OpenAI and other major AI companies are also developing intelligent agents capable of autonomously completing tasks. Earlier this year, OpenAI's competitor Anthropic released its related technology, while Google is reportedly developing AI agents that can make purchases (such as flight and hotel bookings).
While Amazon has made attempts in the agent field, it has not yet made significant strides. In July of this year, the company launched conversational agents on its Bedrock AI development platform, and last week introduced agents to its Amazon Q business assistant platform for enterprise customers and developers. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy also hinted that future versions of Alexa will not only answer questions but also perform specific actions.
