Prem Akkaraju, the new CEO of Stability AI, stated at the Fortune "Brainstorm AI" conference in San Francisco that after a challenging period, the company has now returned to a growth phase, achieving a triple-digit growth rate while successfully eliminating all debts.
Akkaraju mentioned at the conference, "Our balance sheet is clean and debt-free." Although he did not disclose specific revenue figures, he emphasized that Stability AI is currently focused on its API and licensing services, which are rapidly expanding.
Akkaraju joined Stability AI six months ago as part of the new management team, which also includes Dana Settle, co-founder of Greycroft Partners, and tech entrepreneur Sean Parker. Stability AI had faced investor abandonment due to management turmoil, and the founding CEO had even considered a sale. Akkaraju metaphorically stated, "People often remember that Apple was just 90 days away from bankruptcy in 1997. In comparison, our company is in a better position."
Dana Settle described Stability AI's recovery process as a "miracle," noting that often extraordinary returns can be achieved in opportunities that others do not see. Akkaraju and Parker previously worked at Weta Digital, the company responsible for producing several Marvel films and James Cameron's "Avatar." Before officially taking on the role of CEO, Akkaraju had already begun making deals with investors to ensure Stability AI's relevance. He also specifically reached out to Cameron to confirm his agreement to join the board of Stability AI.
Since Akkaraju took office, many investors who had conflicts with the previous management of Stability AI have returned, including major investor Coat and venture capital firm Lightspeed Venture Partners. Their return is seen as a significant indicator of the company's positive outlook. Akkaraju stated, "The way we reached deals was by establishing a basis of aligned interests, with everyone recognizing the importance of Stability AI's technology to the entire ecosystem."
