OpenAI announced during its "12 Days of OpenAI" live event that it is extending its side digital editing space, Canvas, to all ChatGPT users and adding a range of new features. Canvas was initially launched in October and was previously available only to paid users, including ChatGPT Plus, Teams, Edu, and Enterprise subscribers.
The design of Canvas transforms the traditional ChatGPT interface by placing the conversation box at the top of the page and adding a content editing area on the right side, where users can write code blocks or text files.
When users converse with ChatGPT and request modifications to the content in the right sidebar, the system automatically presents these modifications in the sidebar, rather than generating a completely new text reply. This method not only enhances work efficiency but also allows Canvas to provide instant text and code suggestions.
Now, Canvas is integrated with the GPT-4o version, allowing users to use Canvas without switching to GPT-4o. Certain prompts or pasted texts like "Use Canvas..." will automatically open Canvas, which is currently only available in the web version and Windows application.
This update enables Canvas to run Python code, supports more text pasting, and can be launched in custom GPTs. Users can now directly paste Python code into ChatGPT, and the system will automatically open Canvas, meaning users no longer need to manually copy code and run it in their own systems. Canvas can also automatically generate and preview graphics based on the code, providing convenience for developers and analysts to adjust formulas or data. Additionally, Canvas has the capability to find code errors and suggest corrections.
For custom GPT users, Canvas is integrated by default, but users can define when and whether to open Canvas in their created assistants. For existing custom GPTs, OpenAI has not set Canvas as a default feature to avoid impacting the usage of these assistants. However, users can add Canvas as a feature through the settings of their custom GPTs.
OpenAI stated that it will continue to improve Canvas and introduce more new features in the future. Canvas and similar functionalities reflect the interface competition faced by current chat platform model creators as users seek more practical features.
