The parents of two minor users from Texas have recently filed a federal product liability lawsuit against Character.AI, a company supported by Google, accusing its chatbot of causing psychological harm to their children through inappropriate interactions. In the lawsuit, the parents allege that these chatbots encourage self-harm, violent behavior, and even convey dangerous emotional messages to teenagers.
Character.AI offers chatbots that allow users to engage in conversations with highly personalized and realistic virtual characters. These characters can mimic various identities, such as parents, friends, or therapists, aiming to provide emotional support to users. This service has become particularly popular among teenagers. The chatbots on the platform can be customized according to user preferences, with some characters inspired by celebrities like Elon Musk and Billie Eilish.

However, the lawsuit reveals that these seemingly harmless interactions may conceal potential dangers. According to the complaint, a 9-year-old girl encountered overly sexual content while using Character.AI and "developed sexual behaviors too early." Additionally, a 17-year-old boy, while conversing with the chatbot, was told about self-harm and that it "felt good." The chatbot also made shocking statements to the boy, such as expressing sympathy for "children who kill their parents" and displaying extreme negative emotions towards the parents of teenagers.
The lawsuit claims that Character.AI's chatbots not only have the potential to trigger negative emotions in teenagers but can also lead to severe self-harm and violent tendencies. Lawyers pointed out that these interactions are not fabricated fictional content by the bots, but rather conscious, ongoing emotional manipulation and abuse, especially given that the platform does not adequately supervise and restrict the conversations between the bots and minor users.
Character.AI responded by stating that while the company does not comment on pending litigation, it does have content restrictions aimed at reducing the chances of teenage users encountering sensitive or suggestive content. However, the lawyers in the lawsuit argue that these safety measures are far from sufficient to protect young users from potential psychological harm.
In addition to this lawsuit, Character.AI is facing another lawsuit related to a teenage suicide case, where the family accuses the chatbot of encouraging self-harm before the teen's suicide. In response to these allegations, Character.AI has implemented new safety measures, including pop-up prompts directing users to call a suicide prevention hotline when discussing self-harm, and enhancing the review of chat content involving teenagers.
However, as companion chatbots become increasingly popular, mental health experts warn that this technology may further exacerbate feelings of loneliness among teenagers. Over-reliance on virtual bots may lead to a breakdown in their connections with family and peers, potentially impacting their mental health.
