Sources indicate that user activity on Doubao is not high, with users active only 2 to 3 days a week, and the average number of messages exchanged daily is only 5 to 6, with each conversation lasting about 2 minutes, leading to a total usage time of around 10 minutes.
Senior management at Byte believes that the current state of Doubao may not be an issue with the product itself, but rather due to the inherent limitations of text-based AI conversational products. As a result, Byte has decided to invest more resources into lower-interaction, multimodal AI products such as Jiemeng. Jiemeng is an AI creation tool and community launched by Byte, aimed at providing creators with richer tools and platforms, and has garnered significant support from AI creators through Jianying.
As a video creation tool, Jianying has reached 170 million monthly active users, ranking second globally, just behind ChatGPT's 250 million. Jiemeng, led by former Douyin CEO Zhang Nan, not only provides AI creation tools but also possesses a strong content community aspect, attracting a large number of AI creators to publish their works. Byte plans to invest more resources into such multimodal products to enhance their potential in future AI creation and commercialization.
Additionally, Byte is exploring other multimodal, low-barrier AI product forms, such as Maoxiang. According to Intelligent Emergence, the average number of conversation rounds for Maoxiang users is nearly 50 times that of Doubao, indicating that low-interaction barriers and more appealing product forms could become important directions for future AI development.
Byte is continuously optimizing products like Jiemeng and Jianying in an effort to break through the limitations of AI conversational products, exploring more diverse AI application forms, and hoping to pave new paths for the popularization and commercialization of AI technology.
