Midjourney is a popular AI image generation startup with over 21 million Discord users. Recently, the company announced the launch of a new world-building tool called "Patchwork," marking their expansion from image creation into more complex creative collaboration.
"Patchwork" was showcased live on Midjourney's Discord channel, where users need to connect their Midjourney Discord accounts to their Google accounts to access the research preview of Patchwork.
The tool offers a white infinite canvas with a toolbox on the left side, where users can utilize various buttons to add characters, events, factions, locations, props, and other elements. Users can download a JSON file through the "Save" feature, which includes links to all Midjourney images generated on the canvas.
To create a new world, users enter text prompts in the editor bar at the top of the "create" screen, then select one or more from a set of 10 different image styles.
This generates a new whiteboard containing a collection of new static image assets and text boxes or entities (referred to as "scraps"), including input fields that allow users to prompt new images or settings that align with the initial world description, as well as entirely new AI-generated character descriptions.
New character boxes can be added, allowing users to prompt the creation of names and traits. At the same time, users can establish connections between characters and write action sequences and scene descriptions.
The sharing feature enables multiple users to collaborate in real-time, with a world supporting up to 100 users working on the same canvas. However, the more users there are, the more chaotic the collaboration on the canvas may become.
In future updates, Midjourney plans to allow non-users to view these creative boards so that more creative groups can utilize this tool. Midjourney's V7 version will also be released, supporting consistency of characters across different images. Additionally, Kreminski mentioned that Patchwork is powered by three large language models, including an open-source model specifically tailored for Midjourney.
Kreminski stated that in the future, "Patchwork" is expected to evolve into more detailed and interactive 3D virtual scenes, although this goal may take several years to achieve. Meanwhile, Midjourney's founder David Holz revealed during the live stream that multiple personalized model modes will be launched soon, allowing users to adjust generated content according to their preferences.
Holz also mentioned that Midjourney will introduce video models and an updated AI image generator V7 after Christmas, enhancing its understanding of prompts. Furthermore, the company is developing three to four new hardware projects, with plans to gradually release more information in the coming months.
