In a recent series of Threads posts, Instagram head Adam Mosseri emphasized that social media users should remain vigilant in the face of the increasing amount of AI-generated content.

He pointed out that the images and information users see online may not be real, as AI technology is now capable of generating content that closely resembles reality. To help users better assess the authenticity of information, Mosseri mentioned that users should consider the source of the content, and social platforms also have a responsibility to support this.

Mosseri stated that the role of social media platforms is to label AI-generated content whenever possible to help users identify it. However, he also acknowledged that some content may be missed and not labeled in time. Therefore, he emphasized that platforms should also provide background information about the users sharing the content so that users can better determine their trust in that content. His viewpoint reflects a deep concern about the credibility of information on social media.

At this stage, Meta (Instagram's parent company) has not provided sufficient contextual information to help users assess the authenticity of content. Nonetheless, the company recently hinted at potential significant adjustments to its content policies. This change is expected to enhance users' trust in information and help them better cope with the challenges posed by AI technology.

Mosseri mentioned that users should verify the reliability of the information provided by chatbots before trusting AI-driven search engines. This is similar to checking the source of published statements or images, where information from reputable accounts is deemed more trustworthy.

The content moderation approach described by Mosseri is closer to a user-driven review system, such as community notes on Twitter and content filters on YouTube. While it is currently unclear whether Meta will introduce similar features, given the company's past experience of drawing inspiration from other platforms, future content management policies are worth monitoring.
