The School of Artificial Intelligence at Wuhan University has been officially established, marking a new milestone in the university's research and education in the field of artificial intelligence. The newly founded school is led by Professor Zhang Pingwen, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the president of Wuhan University. The school will leverage Wuhan University's rich academic resources and key research institutions, focusing on four areas: mathematical foundations and data science, machine learning and intelligent science, intelligent natural sciences, and intelligent social sciences.
In terms of academic development and scientific research, the school is committed to achieving interdisciplinary innovation in areas such as "AI + Science," "AI + Engineering," "AI + Medicine," and "AI + Humanities and Social Sciences," promoting breakthroughs and advancements in cutting-edge technology. Additionally, the construction of the faculty team is progressing steadily, with the establishment of the Department of Artificial Intelligence Theory, the Department of Artificial Intelligence Applications, as well as the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and the Experimental Teaching Center. In the future, the school will enhance its faculty quality by attracting and nurturing top talent.
It is noteworthy that the School of Artificial Intelligence will start enrolling undergraduate students in 2025, with a major in "Artificial Intelligence." It will also enroll academic master's and doctoral students in the "Intelligent Science and Technology" discipline and professional master's and doctoral students in the "Electronic Information" discipline. This talent cultivation plan aims to supply society with more high-quality professionals in artificial intelligence.
Wang Fei, the general manager of Xiaomi Group's Wuhan region, expressed warm congratulations on the establishment of the School of Artificial Intelligence during the inauguration ceremony and looked forward to establishing a closer cooperative relationship with the new school. He emphasized that through the integration of industry and education, resources can be shared, and advantages can be complemented, promoting the research and application of artificial intelligence technology.
Additionally, it is worth mentioning that Lei Jun, the founder of Xiaomi Group, donated 1.3 billion RMB to his alma mater, Wuhan University, last year to support fundamental research and technological innovation. This donation has injected new momentum into Wuhan University's scientific development, especially in the construction of computer and related fields. In March of this year, Wuhan University and Xiaomi also jointly established a Robotics Department, further promoting deep integration between industry, academia, and research.
